Dutch King Willem-Alexander succeeds mother Beatrix

Dutch King Willem-Alexander succeeds mother Beatrix

AMSTERDAM: Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands abdicated on Tuesday, handing over to her eldest son, Willem-Alexander, who became the first King of the Netherlands in over 120 years. An estimated 25,000 well-wishers cheered outside the Royal Palace in Amsterdam as the abdication and automatic succession were broadcast live. The crowds had gathered in Dam Square from early on Tuesday to see the new King and his wife, Queen Maxima, as they stepped out onto the balcony of the Royal Palace. Beatrix blined back tears as she presented her son. “Some moments ago I abdicated from the throne. I am happy and thankful to present to you your new king,” said Beatrix, 75, who now takes the title of princess. Wearing a sober purple dress, Beatrix signed the abdication document in front of the Dutch cabinet, Willem-Alexander and Maxima, who wore a pale rose-coloured dress with a shimmery skirt and enormous bow on her left shoulder. Willem-Alexander, a 46-year-old water management specialist, is expected to bring a less formal touch to the monarchy together with Maxima, a former investment banker from Argentina. Beatrix chose to retire after 33 years in the role, following in the tradition of her mother and grandmother. April 30, or Queen’s day, is always a day for partying in the Netherlands, and this year’s investiture has provided another excuse to celebrate at a time when plummeting house prices, rising unemployment and slumping consumer confidence have pushed the country into recession. Amsterdam has been awash with orange, the royal colour, for days. Houses were covered in bunting and flags and shop windows were stuffed with orange cakes, sweets, clothes and flowers. Many people took Monday off work and started celebrating in earnest from Monday evening. Nearly a million people were expected to join the street party with dancing to bands and DJs, helping create a carnival atmosphere. “He (Willem-Alexander) knows what is needed. He unites people. He has made it possible for the different generations to mingle more,” said 40-year-old Margriet Dantuma, dressed in an orange skirt, as she joined others on the Amsterdam pavements putting out impromptu stalls of bric-a-brac for sale. The royals are broadly popular, with 78 per cent of Dutch in favour of the monarchy up from 74 percent a year ago, according to an Ipsos poll. But they have been stripped of their political influence, and no longer appoint the mediator who conducts exploratory talks when forming government coalitions.

Musharraf banned from politics for life

Musharraf banned from politics for life

RAWALPINDI/PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Monday banned former military ruler Pervez Musharraf from politics for life. The ruling came in response to an appeal filed by the former army strongman over the rejection of his nomination papers for the National Assembly seat in Chitral. A four-member larger bench, headed by PHC Chief Justice Dost Mohammad Khan and comprising of Justice Malik Manzoor, Justice Syed Afsar Shah and Justice Ikramullah ruled that since Musharraf had abrogated the Constitution twice, he could not be allowed to contest elections for either the National Assembly or the Senate. Announcing the decision, Justice Khan said Musharraf had imposed an illegal emergency and targeted the judiciary, therefore the court was imposing a life-time ban on the retired general, barring him from contesting polls for the national and provincial assemblies as well as the Senate. The bench also rejected the former president's appeal over the rejection of his nomination papers from NA-32 (Chitral). Also today, an anti-terrorist court in Rawalpindi ordered a two-week-long judicial remand for the retired general in the Benazir Bhutto murder case and also granted permission to Balochistan police to question him in the Akbar Bugti killing case. Musharraf was not presented in court during Tuesday's hearing over security reasons. Speaking to media personnel after the hearing, FIA’s special prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali alleged that Musharraf was not cooperating with the investigation team in the Benazir murder case. Earlier last week, the court had sent him on a physical remand. Since then, FIA investigators have been questioning the former military ruler in the high profile murder probe. Moreover, an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi rejected Musharraf’s plea for reconstitution of the joint investigation team (JIT). Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun-and-bomb attack outside Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh on December 27, 2007 while Musharraf was president. She was killed after addressing an election campaign rally in the city. The ATC had indicted Musharraf in the case in February 2011, and in August the same year he was declared a proclaimed offender and his property was attached because of his absence. Also today, the ATC allowed Balochistan police to question Musharraf in the case pertaining to the killing of Baloch nationalist leader Akbar Khan Bugti. Bugti was killed in a military action in the mountains of Dera Bugti on August 26, 2006 while Musharraf was president as well as army chief. Musharraf returned to Pakistan last month after nearly four years of self-imposed exile to contest the May 11 general election. Election officials had barred Musharraf from running for the National Assembly earlier, effectively derailing his attempts to regain a place in politics by standing at the polls. Although Musharraf’s legal battles have provided an electrifying sideshow in the election race, he commands scant popular support and the outcome of the drama is unlikely to have much impact on the final results.

Palestinian kills Israeli settler in West Bank

JERUSALEM: A Palestinian man stabbed and shot dead an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday, the Israeli ambulance service and police said. It was the first time an Israeli has been killed by a Palestinian in the West Bank since 2011. Israeli media said the attacker was standing at a bus stop used by settlers, Israeli soldiers and Palestinians at a junction near the Palestinian city of Nablus. He then stabbed the settler, before seizing the man's gun and shooting him. The Palestinian then began shooting at security services who arrived on the scene, Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld said. He added that the man was in custody. The Israeli internal security service, Shin Beit, has said that during 2012 no Israelis were killed in the West Bank. In March 2011 two settlers and three of their young children were stabbed to death in their home. Nine Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank since the beginning of the year in various incidents, mainly in clashes that have risen sharply in recent months. The Palestinians want to establish a state in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem, territories Israel captured in a 1967 war. Peace talks between the sides broke down in 2010.

Five-year-old Indian girl dies after rape attack: hospital

MUMBAI: A five-year-old Indian girl has died in hospital nearly two weeks after she was raped and found unconscious at a farm, hospital staff and reports said on Tuesday. The girl had been taken by air ambulance from central Madhya Pradesh state to the Care Hospital in Nagpur city on April 20, where she died on Monday night, a spokesman said. “She died from a cardiac arrest at 7:45 pm on Monday. We were taking all measures… but yesterday her condition got bad and her blood pressure went down. She was not reacting to medications,” P.A. Sriram at the hospital told AFP. The girl had been found unconscious by her parents on April 18, a day after a 35-year-old man allegedly raped her in the town of Ghansour and dumped her at a farm, the Press Trust of India reported. She was initially taken to a local hospital, before being transported to Nagpur in Maharashtra state two days later. The police have arrested one accused in the case in northern Bihar state, PTI said. The case is the latest in a string of high-profile sex attacks that have sparked outrage in India over the treatment of women and girls, with protests first erupting in December over the savage gangrape of a 23-year-old student. The April 15 kidnap and brutal rape of a five-year-old in the capital New Delhi, spurred another round of demonstrations in the capital over the high levels of sexual violence and police handling of the case.

no force can withstand 'youth tsunami ' Imran khan

no force can withstand 'youth tsunami ' Imran khan

ATTOCK: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Monday expressed confidence that his party would give a crushing defeat to PML-N in election final on May 11. Addressing a public meetings in Attock, Taxila, Chakwal and Talagang here on Monday, the PTI’s chairman Imran Khan said the spirit and enthusiasm of the youth was a clear indication that change had taken place. “No force can withstand the youth tsunami,” he said while addressing at Liaqut Ali Khan hockey stadium in Attock. He warned that the days of the status quo forces were numbered and the PTI with the support of strong-willed youth would secure a thumping victory in the coming elections. “PTI will defeat the corrupt and plunderers of national wealth with massive public support,” he said. He said that youth were the real force of the party and they had come forward to spread the PTI’s message of change to each nook and corner of the country. The PTI after coming into power would fight for the people’s rights and resolve their issues on war footing, he assured. Besides resolving the issue on emergency basis, the PTI government would uphold the merit and would put an end to the exploitation of small workers and civil servants. He said was a strong Muslim, who strong faith in Allah and his last Prophet Mohammad PBUH. In Chakwal, Imran Khan said May 11 was the day of battle for the future of Pakistan. He was addressing two large public meetings in Chakwal and Talagang here on Monday. He said May 11 was the day of your future not mines as Allah has given me all the blessings. Imran Khan asked the youth to mobilise their parents and other relatives for the real change in the country as according to him only PTI could bring real change. “It never happened in the world that tested parties could bring change,” he told a highly charged and excited gathering. “PML-N remained in power for five times (two times in centre and three times in Punjab) while PPP ruled the country for seven times (three times in centre and four times in Sindh). How could these parties bring change when they both have destroyed the system during their tenure,” he asked. He said that he used to break the partnerships in cricket and now he would break the partnership of Nawaz Sharif and Zardari. Lashing out at the performance of PML N’s government in Punjab said Shahbaz Sharif continued to harp on development in the province but the reality was quite opposite. His performance can be gauged from the crime figures during his tenure, he said. Imran said 40,000 people were murdered, 70,000 abducted, 1,500 women raped, 13,000 killed in accidents, 128,000 vehicles were stolen, 170,000 cases of theft were registered and 150 banks were looted during the five year rule of Shahbaz Sharif. “When all this was happening, the family of Sharif brothers were enjoying a security cover of 1,260 police personnel and were living like kings”, he maintained. He claimed that Rs200 million were spent on the security of the family of Sharifs. “I could have made Shaukat Khanam Hospital in Peshawar by such a hefty amount,” he said. He said Shahbaz Sharif claimed that he would end load-shedding after coming into power but he did not take a single step in this regard, though Article 158 of the Constitution gave powers to provinces to produce electricity on their own. He said that instead of producing electricity, Shahbaz Sharif frittered away Rs70 billion on what he termed as ‘Jangla Bus Service. “By such huge amount of money 3000 megawatt of electricity could have been produced,” he maintained. On this occasion Ayaz Amir’s son Shahnawaz Amir announced to join PTI. Imran Khan welcomed Shahnawaz Amir in PTI fold and also thanked Ayaz Amir for pledging his support to party. While formally kicking off the election campaign of his party in Taxila Imran Khan declared that his party would bring the ‘tsunami of people’ at Grand Trunk Road (GT Road) on May 6 from Lahore to Islamabad which will confirm the defeat of the ‘Lion’. The historical city of Taxila was decorated with multi-coloured party flags, welcoming banners and big boards of the party leadership. Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan said no one could stop the country from metamorphosing into a new Pakistan as soon as PTI came into power. He said a new Pakistan was inevitable, adding it was bound to come into being. He said that after coming in to power, the country would be get rid of the power crisis and mini dam would also be constructed and Pakistan would be able to export electricity. He said that Pakistan was blessed with the rich resources but lacked honest leadership. Khan said if voted to power‚ his party would introduce a system based on justice and equality where the law did not differentiate between the rich and the poor. Addressing a public meeting in Muree, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan said the Sharif brothers could not bring any substantial change in Punjab during their five terms and they can never make any difference if they get another chance to rule.
